What Does the Figure in the Fairy Tail Emblem/Tattoo Represent?

Yo, Mina-san:

I'm a newbie to the FT anime and was trying to figure out what the FT Guild emblem/tattoo figure is.

Did I miss the explanation in an episode or manga chapter?

Is it supposed to be a "Fairy Tail?" I was thinking it might be a bird or a wing. Then, I was wondering if it might be a tail like a horse's or a fox's. Or maybe a flame?

Inquiring minds want to know.

i always thought of it as a dragon....the whole fairy tail name thing is because they wanted to know if a fairy has a tail or not

Actually, there's no explanation of how the emblem came from, nor the name. There's only been theory from Makarov in chapter 63/episode 27, stating what Vampire Slayer said, and if Fairies even existed.

Well, I guess it represents their name. FAIRY TAIL. After all, it looks like a fairy. Ayt?

Scarletgemini, that's what I thought too. I always just assumed it was Hiro Mashima's take on what a fairy looked like.

All of the other guild emblems are stylized, so I wasn't sure. Also, Makarov told Natsu that no one has ever seen a fairy, so no one knows what a fairy's tail looks like. Now, I can sleep peacefully at night !
